Quick update
A real quick update -- we found a contractor that will do the work for half the price, and we managed to get a couple loans to get the needed $$... So we'll be okay. We'll be living at mother-in-law's for the next week or 10 days (though I'll still be working out of this house during the afternoons so I can have Internet access), and we now have a bit more debt burden, but we'll be okay...
We'll be okay.
It's still a shock to that yesterday everything was fine, then this morning they're threatening to tear my house down... But we've got it figured out.
We'll be okay.

Damn, I am so glad to hear this Chris!
Contact one of the city council people or the mayor. It can't hurt, but it could help.
You can start yet another fight between the mayor and the council. The Journal needs something to report on.
Oh, and check with your homeowner's insurance agent. It may not be covered, but it's worth a shot.
Whew. Good thing you got it all worked out!!!!
OMG. Thank GOD you worked this out Chris.
Isn't it amazing how willing "they" are to put you in the street?????
UN freaking believable.
Please keep us updated regularly so we know that things are progressing okay?
((((((YOU)))))) ((((((DAGMAR)))))
Good to hear. I'd keep track of your expenses (including whatever it costs to stay elsewhere) just in case. I can't imagine there isn't some sort of potential negligence action against the neighbors there somewhere.
Well, maybe you have better curse repellent than I. Whew!!
PLEASE document everything and call your insurance agent today. They may be able to get you SOMETHING or tell you where the burden lies. The contractor's insurance may even pay for it, but you have to start acting right now!
Good Luck, I cant believe it.....
Yeah, we're out of immediate danger (so to speak), but we had to do some financial finagling (not easy when you just quit your job to freelance full-time) and we'll be paying off the loans for quite some time, BUT we get to keep the house.
I'm not mad at the neighbors, their contractor, or the city -- I mean, this isn't anyone's fault -- but I am distressed that the city gave me NO time to find an answer. I asked the city inspector if I could simply cap off our sewer line and leave the house for a few weeks until we could find financing to fix things, and he said, "Well, you could, but I'd have to condemn your house..."
So in effect they knocked on my door one morning and said, "If you can't hand us $5,000 to $10,000 now, on the spot, we'll tear your house down." Luckily we found a guy to do it for just under $5k and could get loans, but what happens to other people in this situation?
But we're blessed -- this is a minor thing compared to having a child at war, losing a loved one, battling illness... It's just the suddenness of it that, well, caught me off guard.
Dagmar will be checking the insurance angle out today, and I'll be writing to the City Council to see if they can find a way to offer low-interest loans to others who find themselves in this situation. That would have made things MUCH easier, had they said, "your sewer isn't up to code, it'll cost X amount to fix it, but we can offer you a loan through the city to cover the cost..."
Anyway, I really, REALLY appreciate all the good thoughts and advice you guys have given! I never thought to document things, but I certainly will now! Sound advice indeed!
Whoa that's SOME relief at least. I just read the last post right now. Jesus H. That must have been scary, dude, I'm sorry. I hope everything's going to go smoothly now. Isn't there SOMETHING can be done? It just doesn't seem right.
Chris - you amaze me. You are so upbeat and mellow and etc. Your last comment here has you putting your house problems (not small ones by any means) next to other not small problems and yet you feel that yours are negligible. Me...and everyone else I know...would not do that. You are a unique and special individual and I am lucky to have you to teach me to be a better person.
From a collectors perspective - document, document, document and then make calls to see what your rights are. No blame if you don't want to, but get your rights and make sure you get the help that is out there for you.
Love you and Dagmar - ya'll need a rode trip to come bike with me...
can't believe I wrote 'rode' trip...der...that MBA paid off!
how about a ROADTRIP...put your pretty Kwak next to mine in the desert.
If Moriah is talking the Phoenix area, then hells ya! We'll meet for a beer! I'm sure LK could find a bike to ride somewhere.
